Gov. M. Jodi Rell Says No To Medical Marijuana / Connecticut Joins The List Of No Compassion For The Terminally Ill To Use Marijuana
Medical Marijuana Measure Falls With Connecticut Governor’s Veto
STAMFORD, Conn., June 19 — After struggling with what was described as one of the most difficult decisions in her three-year tenure, Gov. M. Jodi Rell vetoed a measure today that would have legalized the use of marijuana for certain medical conditions.
In a statement, Mrs. Rell, a breast cancer survivor, said, “I completely sympathize with the well-intentioned goal of alleviating pain and suffering, but legal alternatives are available.”
Supporters of the measure were quick to express their disappointment. Gabriel Sayegh, a project director with Drug Policy Alliance, an advocacy group, called the governor’s veto “unconscionable.”
“It guarantees the continued criminalization of people who are trying to relieve pain and suffering,” Mr. Sayegh said.
Governor Vetoes Palliative Pot
Much was made during last year's state election about the Democrats having a veto-proof majority in the General Assembly, meaning enough votes to override a bad decision by the governor.
Well, now's their chance to do so and relieve suffering at the same time. They should override Gov. M. Jodi Rell's veto of a bill permitting the palliative use of marijuana.
The bill would have made it legal in the state for doctors to prescribe marijuana to relieve pain and nausea in people with certain serious illnesses, such as AIDS or cancer. It would have allowed patients or caregivers to grow a certain number of plants. It was humane and compassionate.
