Ed Rosenthal Gets 1 Day Jail Time In Marijuana Case / Thanks To Ed Rosenthal Medical Marijuana Fight Continues

SF: JUDGE DENIES ROSENTHAL ATTORNEY'S FEES FOR DISMISSED FINANCIAL CHARGES

A federal judge has turned down a bid by Oakland marijuana activist Ed Rosenthal for attorney's fees for his costs of fighting tax evasion and money laundering charges that were dismissed before a trial.

U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer of San Francisco issued a ruling rejecting the request Friday afternoon, shortly after he sentenced Rosenthal to one day already served in jail for marijuana cultivation.

Breyer wrote that even though he dismissed the financial accusations, the charges weren't frivolous and the government therefore should not be required to pay Rosenthal's legal costs.

The judge wrote, "The court does not find that the government acted maliciously or with an intent to harass the defendant.''

Convicted medical pot grower avoids prison sentence

SAN FRANCISCO—Ed Rosenthal, the self-described "Guru of Ganja," will not spend any time in prison despite a conviction for growing and distributing hundreds of marijuana plants, a federal judge ruled Friday.
A jury convicted Rosenthal, 63, in May of three cultivation and conspiracy charges after U.S. District Court Judge Charles Breyer prohibited his lawyers from telling the jury that Rosenthal was working for a pot club sanctioned by the city of Oakland.

On Friday, Breyer said the one-day prison sentence was still punishment enough for Rosenthal, who once wrote the "Ask Ed" column for High Times magazine and has written books with titles including "The Big Book of Buds" and "Ask Ed: Marijuana Law. Don't Get Busted."

Nonetheless, Rosenthal said he still planned to appeal his conviction.

"I should not remain a felon," he said.

"Live Earth" The Concert For World Climate Change / "Live Earth" Is About So Much More Than Music

Sydney Kicks Off 24-Hour World Climate Change Concert

July 7 (Bloomberg) -- More than 45,000 people flocked to Sydney's Aussie Stadium today for the first of the Live Earth concerts, a series of music events being held in eight countries over the next 24 hours to spur action on global warming.

``This is not just about raising awareness but letting every individual out there know that they too can do something about the scourge that is global warming,'' Live Earth promoter Mark Pope said in a telephone interview from Sydney. ``Music has always been good at promoting issues like this.''

Live Earth: Fans Urged to Go Green

SYDNEY, Australia - Live Earth started in Asia with an ancient Aboriginal instrument, toured through rehashed 1970s rock, 1980s pop and laid-back surfer music, and touched the future with a holographic appearance by Al Gore.

It moved on to London, where Madonna flaunted her eco-friendly side as the headliner for an eclectic show that began with a battery of percussion set to flashing images of wildlife, pollution, alternative energy sources and the Earth seen from space.

Red-hot lineup

NEW YORK -- Live Earth is ambitious by any standard: eight concerts featuring the biggest names in music, playing for a 24-hour period across the globe, all for the cause of global warming.

But like its template -- 2006's Live 8, the global concert devoted to poverty in Africa -- the mission of Live Earth is somewhat amorphous.

Its aim is to "trigger a global movement to solve the climate crisis."

Falcons QB Michael Vick Dogfighting Investigation Continues / Was Michael Vick Running Dogfights At His Home ?

Feds search Vick's property in dogfighting case

SURRY, Va. — Federal agents investigating possible dogfighting searched property owned by Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick today.

Portsmouth’s WAVY-TV broadcast video of investigators working under a blue tarp on a portion of Vick’s wooded property in southeastern Virginia. They were sifting dirt collected in white buckets and clearing brush. Some wore T-shirts with the wording “POLICE.”

"Bad Newz Kennels" ran dog fights on Michael Vick property

The federal authorities alleged in court documents, that Virginia property owned by the Atlanta Falcons star Michael Vick, was used by an outfit named "Bad Newz Kennels" to stage area for housing and training the pit bills involved in the illegal dog fights. The feds searched the property of Michael Vick again on Friday, but did not comment on any findings.
Michael Vick, who claims to have rarely visited the property, has not been named in the court papers, nor have any charges been filed against the Atlanta Falcons player. But they allege that illegal dog fights have been staged on Vick's property as far back as 2002, and many people travelled from the neighboring states to witness the activity or to participate with their own dogs. Members of the "Bad Newz Kennels" have also travelled around those states with their dogs.

The Latest News From Michael Yon / Michael Yon Reports From The Front Lines Of Iraq

Update on “Bless the Beasts and Children”

Since the publication of “Bless the Beasts and Children” many questions have arisen: some of which I can and will answer here, and some whose answers lie elsewhere.

Today, late afternoon on 3 July in Baqubah, Colonel Hiduit from 2nd Brigade 5th Iraqi Army was able to provide some additional details about the murders, as the ongoing investigation begins to yield more facts. The name of the village was not on any maps I examined while preparing the dispatch, but Colonel Hiduit said the name is al Hamira. Coordinates to the area of the gravesites are MC 679 381.
