Law Enforcement Against Prohibition - Stop The Drug War !

Founded on March 16, 2002, LEAP is made up of current and former members of the law enforcement and criminal justice communities who are speaking out about the failures of our existing drug policies. Those policies have failed, and continue to fail, to effectively address the problems of drug abuse, especially the problems of juvenile drug use, the problems of addiction, and the problems of crime caused by the existence of a criminal black market in drugs.

Although those who speak publicly for LEAP are people from the law enforcement and criminal justice communities, a large number of our supporting members do not have such experience. You don't have to have law enforcement experience to join us.

By continuing to fight the so-called "War on Drugs", the US government has worsened these problems of society instead of alleviating them. A system of regulation and control of these substances (by the government, replacing the current system of control by the black market) would be a less harmful, less costly, more ethical and more effective public policy.

Angel Raich Loses Medical Marijuana Appeal / US Government Has No Compassion

When will this government realize that the people have spoken and they want the "Medical Marijuana Laws" passed?
They need to realize that the outdated laws concerning Marijuana are total bullshit. I wonder if most people realize that Marijuana is put in the same class as Heroine and Meth? The highest class you can get on the drug class list. That’s insane considering how mild of a drug it is compared to the rest of the drugs in that class.
The number of arrests and jail/prison sentences are skyrocketing day by day and that fills the jails and prisons so they need more space to lock-up the real criminals who deserve to be there. The prison game is big money in this country and the taxpayers are suffering because of it.
Wake-up Washington and do something about these insane drug laws before everyone is in prison for smoking a joint... BJC

Calif. appeals court rules against dying woman in medical marijuana case

SAN FRANCISCO - A woman whose doctor says marijuana is the only medicine keeping her alive can face federal prosecution on drug charges, a federal appeals court ruled Wednesday.

The ruling was the latest legal defeat for Angel Raich, a mother of two from Oakland suffering from scoliosis, a brain tumor, chronic nausea and other ailments who sued the federal government pre-emptively to avoid being arrested for using the drug. On her doctor’s advice, Raich eats or smokes marijuana every couple of hours to ease her pain and bolster her appetite.

Dying Woman Loses Appeal on Marijuana as Medication

SAN FRANCISCO, March 14 — Federal appellate judges here ruled Wednesday that a terminally ill woman using marijuana was not immune to federal prosecution simply because of her condition, and in a separate case a federal judge dismissed most of the charges against a prominent advocate for the medicinal use of the drug.

Medical Marijuana: Should getting high be legal

The legalization of marijuana has been a source of social and political conflict in the United States for decades.

At PLU, illegal marijuana use is the most common drug abuse violation with more than 10 reported violations in the last three years.

Despite federal prohibition, attempts to legalize marijuana have appeared on several state ballots including Alaska, Arizona, California, Oregon, Nevada, and Washington.

Medical Marijuana in America

"What was done with the seed saved from the India Hemp last summer? It ought, all of it, to have been sewn again; that not only a stock of seed sufficient for my own purposes might have been raised, but to have disseminated the seed to others; as it is more valuable than the common Hemp."

Mexico extradites drug kingpins to U.S.

MEXICO CITY - Mexico extradited drug kingpins Osiel Cardenas and Hector “El Guero” Palma along with several other major traffickers to the United States on Friday as part of a major crackdown against warring cartels.
President Felipe Calderon took office in December and quickly sent troops and elite police units to tackle Mexico’s main drug cartels, in an attempt to halt a gruesome surge in violence that claimed more than 2,000 lives last year.
A total of fifteen men arrived in the United States aboard flights from Mexico on Friday.

The illegal drug trade is a global black market consisting of production, distribution, packaging and sale of illegal psychoactive substances. The illegality of the black markets purveying the drug trade is relative to geographic location, and the producing countries of the drug markets (many South American, Far East, and Middle East countries) are not as inclined to have "zero-tolerance" policies, as the consuming countries of the drug trade (mostly United States and Europe) are. The economic reality of the massive profiteering inherent to the drug trade serve to extend its reach despite the best efforts of enforcement agencies worldwide. In the wake of the economic reality, the social consequences (crime, violence, imprisonment, social unrest) of the drug trade are undeniably problematic.

QB Michael Vick's water bottle being tested for marijuana

Jan. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick is being investigated after signs of marijuana were found in a water bottle he carried at an airport security check, according to a police report.
The bottle, with a hidden compartment that had ``a pungent aroma closely associated with marijuana,'' was taken from a recycling bin at Miami International Airport yesterday, the report by Miami-Dade Police said. A substance, described as ``a dark particulate,'' was sent to a lab for analysis, which might take three months, police said.
Vick, 26, a passenger on an Air Tran flight from Miami to Atlanta yesterday, wasn't arrested. He surrendered the bottle and passed through security before the substance was found, police said. Vick wasn't available for comment and agent Joel Segal didn't return a message left on his mobile phone.
``Right now we're waiting for the lab results,'' police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta said in a telephone interview. ``Depending on those results, we'll then determine where the investigation goes next.''
The National Football League Falcons said in a statement that they ``plan to look into this matter and discuss it further with Michael before having any further comment.''
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello didn't immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
