Mom indicted in deadly MySpace hoax
A Missouri mother was indicted Thursday in the case of a teen who killed herself after being taunted on the social networking site MySpace.com.

A federal indictment accuses Lori Drew, 49, of O'Fallon, Missouri, of using a MySpace account to pose as a 16-year-old boy and feign romantic interest in the girl.

The girl, Megan Meier, committed suicide after her online love interest spurned her, according to prosecutors, telling her the world would be a better place without her.

Drew faces up to 20 years in prison on charges of conspiracy and accessing protected computers to obtain information to inflict emotional distress.

Lori Drew, 49, stood quietly beside her attorney Monday. She pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and accessing protected computers without authorization to get information used to inflict emotional distress. She is free on $20,000 bond.

The proceeding lasted only a few minutes. Drew and her lawyer declined to comment to reporters waiting outside the courtroom.

The Vallejo woman known as the "D.C. Madam" hanged herself at her mother's home in Florida, two weeks after a federal jury convicted her of running a prostitution service whose clients included some well-known Washington insiders, police said today.

Deborah Jeane Palfrey, 52, was found hanged with a nylon rope in a shed on her mother's property in Tarpon Springs, about 20 miles northwest of Tampa on Florida's Gulf Coast. Palfrey's 76-year-old mother, Blanche Palfrey, found the body this morning after awakening from a nap, Tarpon Springs police Capt. Jeffrey Young said at a news conference.

With all the death and particularly, video of death, that has started to crop up in our society we start to become somewhat more tolerable and less disgusted by gore & death portrayed in Hollywood films. However; this most recent case forces us to remember that things like real, actual death are not as tolerable as a movie at the theater. Especially when the death is live on webcam.

Kevin Whitrick was a 42 year old man who, March 23rd, became the UK's first cyber suicide today. He was participating in a chatroom, webcam'ing the entire event of him typing a cord around a hook and tying it around his neck. Some users of the chatroom that watched it described it in various ways. Some saying that they pleaded with him to not do it; others say they heard people egging him on. Then when he committed the act, the tone changed and the people in the chatroom realized it was no joke and several called the authorities.

Kevin Whitrick logged on to an internet chat room and announced that he was going to commit suicide. He then switched on his webcam, stood on a chair, smashed through his ceiling to expose a joist, tied a rope around his neck and hanged himself.

Several visitors to the site thought that it was a hoax and egged him on, but one dialled 999. By the time police arrived at his flat, he was dead. The case is believed to be the first of its kind in Britain.

A father-of-two hanged himself live over the internet in Britain's first 'cyber suicide'.

ABOUT 100 internet chatroom users who witnessed a British man kill himself online - including some who allegedly incited him to hang himself - were being traced by detectives this weekend to be questioned over their roles in the cyber suicide.
Kevin Whitrick, 42, from Telford, Shropshire, killed himself after being goaded in an insult chatroom at the Paltalk website.
One of the users is claimed to have told him: "F..king do it. Get on with it."

The death has raised concerns that some internet forums encourage people to take their lives.

According to one charity that works to prevent suicide, there have been 17 deaths in Britain since 2001 involving internet chatrooms or sites that give advice on suicide methods.

January 12th 2003 a young College Student by the name of Brandon Vedas, age 21 died from an overdose of prescription drugs and alcohol. We know this happens every day and it is always sad when it does. Why is this case different than the others? Because it took place while Brandon was on his computer in a chatroom on Efnet called #shroomery. A full channel watched Brandon on his webcam take pill after pill washing it down with alcohol chasers. " I told u I was hardcore" he says to the voyeurs watching him. Some warned him to be careful. Others taunted him to go further. "That's not much," said a teenager from rural Oklahoma who calls himself Smoke2K. "Eat more. I wanna see if you survive or if you just black out."

A special service will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2003 at 10 AM at South Mountain Park, Ramada 4. Brandon will always be remembered by his family, friends, and the online communities he was involved with.

Comet McNaught has continued to brighten as it approaches the sun and it is now the brightest comet in 30 years. For observers in the northern Hemisphere, tonight is probably the best time to see it: Go outside this evening and face the sunset. A clear view of the western horizon is essential, because the comet hangs very low. As the twilight fades to black, it should become visible to the naked eye. Observers say it's a fantastic sight through binoculars.
In the days ahead, Comet McNaught will pass the sun and emerge in good position for southern hemisphere viewing later this month. Meanwhile, solar heating will continue to puff up the comet, causing it to brighten even more. It could become one of the brightest comets in centuries, visible even in daylit skies.
I wonder if there are any plans for a group of insane people to take-off on Comet McNaught like they did on Hale Bopp…
