Tammy Faye Messner, who as Tammy Faye Bakker helped her husband, Jim, build a multimillion-dollar evangelism empire and then watched it collapse in disgrace, has died. She was 65.
Messner had battled colon cancer since 1996 that more recently spread to her lungs. She died peacefully Friday at her home near Kansas City, Mo., said Joe Spotts, her manager and booking agent.
She divorced her husband of 30 years, with whom she had two children, in 1992 while he was in prison for defrauding millions from followers of their PTL television ministries. The letters stood for "Praise the Lord" or "People that Love."

Aspiring composer J.T. Buck was knocking back a few in a bar one night in 2004 when a friend asked what the subject of his next show would be.

Seeing Tammy Faye Messner (formerly Bakker) being interviewed by Larry King on the bar's TV, Buck blurted her name.

"I was kidding at the time," he admits of the impulse to write a show about the ebullient televangelist best known for her excessive makeup, onscreen crying, the scandals that bankrupted her Praise the Lord Club empire (and sent former husband Jim Bakker to jail) and, in a somber turn of recent years, her battle with cancer.

At the height of his ministry, about 13.5 million people watched him and Tammy Faye on a daily basis. PTL Club -- the South Carolina operation that owned the 2,300-acre Heritage USA Christian retreat and gospel theme park grossed $129 million. The Bakkers also had a 10,226-square-foot "parsonage" (actually a condo in Florida) into which they put $60,000 in gold fixtures, and his-and-hers Rolls Royces (which he later used to brag on the air were proof of God's blessing on his life.) They also owned several other less expensively decorated properties, and an "air conditioned dog house". Alas, it didn't last...

NEW YORK (CNN) -- The air was declared clean, but the carcinogen asbestos was found in dust and debris hurled into midtown Manhattan by a steam pipe explosion the day before, New York City announced Thursday.
The city's Department of Emergency Management will continue to test the debris after finding asbestos in six of 10 samples, according to a statement from the city's Office of Emergency Management.

"People who may (have come) into contact with the steam or debris should take a shower and place their clothes in plastic bags for cleaning or disposal," the statement said.

Asbestos is a fibrous mineral used to insulate pipes. Longterm exposure can cause allergies, skin problems and cancer.

A commitment has been made to negotiate reasonable royalties, recognizing the industry’s long-term value and its still-developing revenue potential.

During negotiations SoundExchange committed temporarily not to enforce the new royalty rates so webcasters can stay online as new rates are agreed upon.

This development is due in great part to the millions of people who have let their Congressional representatives know about their support of Internet radio. Over 125 representatives have cosponsored the bill to this point.

We urge listeners to continue calling their Senators and Representative to ask them to co-sponsor the Internet Radio Equality Act. Thank you.
